Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has suffered a knee injury and will miss this summer's European Championships.

The midfielder has struggled for form this season due to a number of injury issues, and he will now miss up to eight weeks due to his latest lay-off.

And Wenger has admitted his disappointment at the former Southampton man's latest setback after he had worked hard to regain full fitness.

"We lost Oxlade-Chamberlain, and he will be out for six to eight weeks I think," he told reporters. "It's very sad. He was physically ready.

"There is no chance of the Euros for him. He will be back at the beginning of July."

Wenger also confirmed centre-back Per Mertesacker will play no further part this season due to a hamstring problem, but Santi Cazorla could return against Manchester City on Sunday.

"Cazorla came through an Under-21s' game well. The season is over for Mertesacker due to his hamstring."
