Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former Governor of Kano State and current Vice Presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for an exhaustive investigation into the recent murder of Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, a prominent social media political commentator.
In a statement issued late on Wednesday via his official Facebook page, Kwankwaso described the killing as a "horrific attack." He urged the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf to promptly establish an investigative panel to delve into the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Kwankwaso warned that if the present government fails to take decisive action, an incoming NDC administration, should it be elected in 2027, would reopen the case. "Should the authorities fail to take decisive and transparent action, the incoming NDC Government will, upon assumption of office, launch a full investigation and take all necessary steps to hold those responsible accountable," Kwankwaso asserted.
The opposition leader further implored both state and federal authorities to guarantee the protection of dissenting voices, emphasising that freedom of expression is a fundamental right enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution. He added, "The Nigerian authorities must ensure a full investigation and that those responsible are held accountable," while also extending his condolences to the family, friends, and followers of the deceased commentator.
Dan Shagamu, a 54-year-old father of six, was discovered murdered at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso LGA. This tragic discovery has ignited widespread outrage across the state.
Amnesty International has also condemned the killing, raising concerns about the increasing threats faced by journalists and commentators in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
State police authorities have confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the murder, and investigations are currently ongoing. The state police command indicated that upon the conclusion of the investigation, the suspects would be formally arraigned before the court.
