The former Accountant General of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode defeated his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenger, Olujimi Agbaje and three others in a keenly contested poll supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The state's Collation Officer, Prof. Isaac Adewole, the Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, said Ambode won in 14 local government areas, while his PDP rival clinched six local councils. The APC candidate polled 811,994 votes, while Agbaje scored 659,788. "Ambode having polled the highest number of votes cast in the election and satisfied the mandatory 25 per cent in all the local governments is hereby declared elected as governor of the state," Prof. Adewole announced.
