In 2014, Mercedes introduced its AMG Sport line that was designed to bridge the gap between standard models and AMG performance derivatives. Now it seems the German marque has backflipped on that decision and actually intends on scraping the AMG Sport badge.
According to Car and Driver, AMG Sport branded models will be moved up into the crazy world of AMG proper. It is suggested that this decision comes after the new SLC43 launched without the 'Sport' badge in its name and as a replacement to a true-AMG model, the SLK55 AMG.
So far, all AMG Sport branded models launched (C450 AMG and GLE450) are powered by a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo with 362 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. With the launch of the Mercedes-AMG SLC43, that engine is no longer restricted to lesser AMG models.
Ultimately, the publication says, the current C450 and GLE450 models will be rebadged the Mercedes-AMG C43 and Mercedes-AMG GLE45 and afterwards this year, a Mercedes-AMG E43 will hit the market.
