Jose Mourinho has placed his faith in Memphis Depay ahead of the new Premier League season and stated he intends to keep him at Manchester United.
The Netherlands winger had been one of last season's most underwhelming performers at Old Trafford, as Louis van Gaal's side failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Memphis was expected to be offloaded this summer, but Mourinho surprised onlookers by opting to keep him and instead send Adnan Januzaj out on loan.
And now the Portuguese has praised the 22-year-old's professionalism, and is backing him to overcome his former distractions and fulfill his initial promise at United.
"Of course, I want Memphis to be part of my squad,” Mourinho told reporters.
“I don’t want to go into last season too much, but I know the player I’ve watched at PSV and the World Cup two years ago when he was a very young kid.
“Having that player in mind, I want to keep him. And I believe in him, yes. Especially as I see a good boy, a good kid, a good professional. I don’t care what people think.
"You can see him driving a nice car and you think this guy is not thinking about football, but that is not the case.
“He is frustrated with what happened last season, where he lost all confidence. But he will be back.”
Memphis is expected to play some part when United open their Premier League title challenge at AFC Bournemouth on Sunday.
