Fresh off the heels of revealing its new BMW 5-Series rival, the S90, Volvo has turned its attention to the next-generation S60 sedan.

The new model will go head-to-head with the latest BMW 3-Series and Audi A4 models and if Motor Trend is to believed, the car could borrow a number of key pieces and technologies from its bigger siblings, the S90 and XC90 SUV.

For starters, it is reported that the current model's 7-inch infotainment system will be replaced with the same 9.3-inch screen used elsewhere in the Volvo range. That means it'll also come with the most up-to-date version of the Sensus infotainment system.

More important than this potential feature is that the next-gen Volvo S60 could even have the same semi-autonomous technology of the S90. The implementation of such a system in the Swedish firm's entry-level sedan will be important in its long-term goal of having no one in any of its vehicles killed or seriously injured by 2020.

In terms of powertrains, the most-popular S60 could receive a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo with 250 hp. Meanwhile, a plug-in hybrid will also be offered with over 300 hp on tap thanks to an electric motor and a more traditional internal combustion engine with a supercharger and turbocharger.

To ensure the new model appeals to a broad range of customers, it will also be available in long-wheelbase specification, just like the current car.
