N100m Police Funds Transfer: Error Rectified

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that a N100 million transfer into the personal account of Victor Egbetokun, son of the outgoing Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, was made in error and has since been returned to the Anambra State Government.

This clarification follows an online report alleging that the funds were transferred from the Anambra State Government’s security vote account directly into Victor Egbetokun's personal account. The report sparked immediate concern and led to the NPF addressing the situation publicly.

Speaking on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television on Monday, the police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the transaction was instantly flagged and reversed. “You could remember when he (Omoyele Sowore) said N100 million was paid into the account of the son of the IGP. I called the son of the IGP immediately to know what was going on, and he explained,” Hundeyin stated.

Victor Egbetokun informed Hundeyin that upon seeing the N100 million in his account, he immediately instructed his accounts officer to reverse the money, which was done. He provided a printed bank statement as proof. The young man was subsequently compelled to close that particular account and has since submitted a petition to the EFCC, requesting an investigation into the initial allegation. Hundeyin reiterated that this was a mistaken transaction, confirming that the funds were promptly returned to the Anambra State Government’s account shortly after the alert was received.
