Opposition in Democracy: Shehu Sani Urges Credible Leaders
As Nigerian political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, Senator Shehu Sani has emphasised the critical need for a vibrant and credible opposition, warning that the nation's democracy cannot flourish without it.
Senator Sani conveyed these sentiments during a recent press briefing held in Kaduna. His remarks came in response to the ongoing developments surrounding the former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
The Imperative of a Robust Opposition
βI must warn Nigerians that we need an opposition; we need opposition in any democracy, because without opposition a nation stands the chance of sliding into grief,β Sani stated, underscoring his grave concerns about the future of the country's political landscape.
However, the former lawmaker also cast doubt upon the integrity and suitability of those currently positioning themselves as alternative leaders in anticipation of the forthcoming general election.
βBut the question you have to ask yourself is: are these people who are parading themselves as opposition, are they credible enough to present an alternative to each and every one of us? These are questions we must ask them,β Senator Sani asserted, challenging the public to scrutinise potential candidates.
Beyond Familiar Faces for 2027
He contended that a significant number of individuals now claiming to be figures of opposition were, in fact, integral parts of previous administrations. These past governments, according to Sani, were instrumental in contributing to the myriad of challenges currently facing Nigeria.
Senator Sani maintained that for the 2027 elections, Nigerians must look beyond familiar political actors and instead demand leaders who possess proven integrity and a genuine commitment to the nation's progress.
