Former Rangers International of Enugu and Eagles defender, Kingsley Onye wouldn't mind an opportunity to serve the country as assistant to the newly appointed Super Eagles Coach, Sunday Oliseh.
In a recent chat, Onye who once featured for the defunct Leventis United of Ibadan and Iwuanyanwu Nationale of Owerri stated that Oliseh is a capable individual, whose records in football speaks volume and holds a strong bragging right to return the senior national team to an enviable position.
“Nigeria’s football fortunes has fallen a bit but the appointment of Sunday Oliseh is a huge step in our desire to reclaim the glory days. I am happy about his appointment because Oliseh is undoubtedly the man Nigeria needs at the moment.
“I want him to be given the necessary support because every inch of negative interference could spell doom for the national team. He should be allowed to carry out his responsibilities effectively, then, the expected results would be achieved.”
Onye also expressed his views on the selection criteria for Super Eagles players, while noting that some of them needed to be replaced by the younger boys in the team.
“I’ll like to state that Enyeama is old for the national team now. Oliseh needs to give the other goalkeepers an opportunity to prove their worth in the national team. I am also glad that his style would be a huge departure from the previous ones employed in the selection of players.”
On the appointment of Oliseh’s assistants, Onye said, “I wouldn’t mind the role of an assistant coach in the Super Eagles but, if I am not considered, Sylvanus Okpala would be my number one candidate for that role.”
