Videographer Allen Reid caught the backstage moment, which he captioned 'Mark Wahlberg leaving,' before duly serving it up on Twitter for everybody to enjoy.

The 45-year-old Ted star's antics were widely mocked, with one saying he is a 'typical bandwagon fan,' while another posting 'shame.'

However he later said he had to leave as 'his youngest' was ill, though he did not specify if it was his youngest son Brendan, eight, who was with him at the game, or his daughter Grace, who is two years his junior.

He said on Instagram: 'I had to leave the game early because my youngest wasn't feeling well. Trust me, I would have loved to be at the stadiumbut family first. Doesn't mean I don't love my Patriots too!'
