Trump Speaks with NATO leaders, to meet
U.S. President, Donald Trump agreed to meet alliance leaders in Europe in May to discuss how they can increase their funding on the Western Alliance.
As stated by a statement by the white House, Trump in a phone call on Sunday with NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, also touched on the separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Recall that part of Trumpβs campaign promise was to push NATO members to increase their funding to the western alliance to ease the financial burden on the United States.
This proposal has drawn opposition from both his fellow Republicans as well as Democrats and the idea has worried European allies who fear Russian President Vladimir Putin might take advantage, Reuters reports.
The White House statement said Trump and Stoltenberg βdiscussed how to encourage all NATO allies to meet their defense spending commitments.β

In an interview broadcast on Sunday during Fox Channelβs Super Bowl pre-game show, Trump waved off concern from interviewer Bill OβReilly that βPutinβs a killer.β
βWeβve got a lot of killersβ¦You think our countryβs so innocent? You think our countryβs so innocent?β Trump said, citing the 2003 war in Iraq.
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, who had lost to Trump in the Republican presidential primary battle last year, posted on twitter that it would be a mistake to lift U.S. sanctions on Russia, a step Trump has been considering.
