A leader of the Osun State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Yemi Oladimeji, has stated that the ongoing trial of the Senate President, Dr. Olubukola Saraki, should not be politicised.

Oladimeji, who spoke through the platform of his political group, Imole De, stated President Muhammadu Buhari should be cautious not to be misled by some politicians, who have an axe to grind with Saraki.

He said, “The eyes of the world are on Nigeria. Let it not be seen that Saraki is being victimised for daring the leadership of the All Progressives Congress when he emerged Senate President against the wish of the party.

“The trial of Saraki should be fair and devoid of underhand intrigues capable of sending the wrong signals to Nigerians and the international community. The gains recorded so far in our march towards a sustainable democracy could be eroded if Saraki is victimised.

“Saraki, as the third in the country’s leadership hierarchy, should not be humiliated; we must be careful the way we treat his case because what goes around comes around. We are not saying that he should be left off the hook if he has committed any financial crime against the Nigerian state but he should be tried fairly.”

Oladimeji enjoined Buhari to ensure a quick resolution of Saraki’s trial because, according to him, bills from the executive arm of government might be delayed by the Senate if the trial lingers on.

“The overall interest of Nigeria should be put into focus in this matter. We must also not fail to reflect on the motive behind the trial and its overall consequence on Nigeria,” Oladimeji stated.
