An aircraft with the body of a former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Agagu, on board, crashed in Lagos this morning less than a minute after take-off from the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja.

The EMBRA plane 120, with other 20 passengers on board, was conveying the body of the former governor, who died some days ago, to Akure, the state capital, for the final burial ceremonies.

The 30-seat plane, belonging to Associated Airlines, was stated to have crashed around 9.20am immediately after take-off into the compound of a private firm, around the MMIA access gate.

Agagu's wife had flown in an earlier plane and had arrived Akure before plane carrying former Governor's corpse crashed.

Only 15 persons were found aboard the crashed aircraft- 9 dead, 6 survivors taken to the Airforce hospital in Ikeja.

Mr. Agagu's burial program started at the University of Ibadan on Monday. He died on September 13.

Mr. Agagu was to be buried tomorrow (11 a.m.), while a lying-in-state was to be held today in Akure.

Ondo officials and Mr. Agagu's family moved to the Ondo government house from Akure airport after hearing of the crash.

Sources on ground stated one of his sons was involved in the crash alongside the commissioner of tourism in Ondo State who had been detailed to accompany the corpse from Lagos.

Agagu's casket remained intact, but failed to open after all efforts by the rescue teams has now been moved to the Air force base close to the Airport.
