During an interview with the publication, the director of the Porsche 911 Turbo line, Erhard Mossle, revealed that the Mission-E concept launched in September the previous year could lead to the creation of an electric 911.

“The Mission E could lead to a future when we need more electric cars to meet our regulations. So, you can imagine a Mission E with two-doors – the car looks great and there could be potential for a sports car. Whether it’s called a 911 or not is another discussion.

“Maybe, the Mission E is the starting point in this segment and as with our other car lines, you don’t just have one car, there are some variants,” Mossle said.

Porsche has previously hinted at the possibility of a plug-in hybrid version of the 911 and given the continued push and demand for high-performance and ultra-efficient sports cars, it seems very probable the automaker will eventually be promoted to create an electric 911.

While to several that may sound like sacrilege, electric cars have already proven their performance potential. With the Mission-E for example, Porsche claims its 600 hp electric powertrain will launch it to 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds. If such a drivetrain were utilised in the smaller and lighter 911, hypercar-rivalling performance would be achievable.

All-electric versions of both the Audi R8 and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG have already launched, albeit in limited numbers, and it seems as though Porsche isn't too far behind.
