Cristiano Ronaldo has urged his Portugal team-mates not to give up hope of reaching the Euro 2016 knockout stages despite their slow start at the tournament.

Ronaldo spurned a penalty in Portugal's 0-0 stalemate with Austria in Paris to prolong his side's wait to get up and running in France.

Portugal also underwhelmed as they shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Iceland in their opening match, meaning they are currently two points behind Group F leaders Hungary.

But Ronaldo is remaining positive about Portugal's chances of reaching the last 16 and has issued a rallying cry to his team-mates.

"This is football," said Ronaldo, who broke Luis Figo's all-time Portugal appearances record against Austria. "It was something we did not want.

"We created plenty of opportunities, but could not finish. I also failed with a penalty and other chances.

"We must continue to believe and thank once again the Portuguese who were here.

"We will try to give our best in the next game. We have to think it's still possible. If we win, we will qualify. Portugal has to believe."

Portugal take on Hungary in Lyon on Wednesday, while Iceland lock horns with Austria at Stade de France on the same day.
