The Red Devils boss was prepared to walk away from Old Trafford but was convinced to stay by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward
Louis van Gaal offered to resign as manager of Manchester United, following the club's 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Old Trafford on Saturday, according to The Sun.
The defeat capped another turgid display from the Red Devils, with little attacking verve or purpose, and with calls growing for the Dutchman to be sacked, the 64-year-old offered to leave.
But executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward refused to sanction Van Gaal's departure, wanting the manager to remain in place until the end of the season rather than risk upheaval during the current campaign.
And Van Gaal has agreed to stay on for now, with the club due to face Derby County in the FA Cup on Friday.
