Schalke have made an informal enquiry over securing the services of Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic, Goal understands.
The Bundesliga side, resigned to losing the dazzling Leroy Sane this summer, have identified the 22-year-old as a possible candidate to firm up their options on the wing.
They have approached his representatives to fully ascertain Markovic’s situation, with Liverpool open to offers for the Serbian.
He will not be afforded much playing time under Jurgen Klopp next season given the depth of attacking options at the manager’s disposal, as well as the reduction of fixtures sans European commitments.
Schalke are one of a few clubs looking at Markovic, who spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce.
He has overlooked advances from Portugal’s Sporting and the opportunity to reunite with Jorge Jesus, his former manager at Benfica.
Having already played in the Primeira Liga, Germany and Italy are the most appealing destinations to Markovic, as he is keen on a new challenge.
Serie A outfit Fiorentina are understood to have also been in contact with his camp to judge the feasibility of a deal.
Liverpool want to source the best possible move for the player, who has already lifted four league titles across two different countries, and would not discount the option of another loan agreement if there is a sizeable fee attached.
