Benik Afobe provided Eddie Howe's side with an early lead but the Dutchman responded just before the break, though the hosts remain stuck firmly in the relegation zone
Sunderland recovered from an early setback but still could not find the victory against Bournemouth which would have gone some way towards lifting them out of a relegation quagmire.
Former Arsenal striker Benik Afobe reflected the visitors' early dominance at the Stadium of Light with a powerful finish in the 13th minute but Sam Allardyce's men stiffened their resolve as the half wore on and equalised just before the break through Patrick van Aanholt.
The teams were well matched thereafter, with Bournemouth in particular having to hold off some intense pressure from the Black Cats, but it should have been Eddie Howe's side who walked away with the points, Junior Stanislas guilty of missing a huge opportunity from close range late in the game.
