Switzerland managed to book their place in the knockout rounds of the World Cup after they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Costa Rica on Wednesday evening.

Blerim Dzemaili opened the scoring for Switzerland before Rodney Wallace equalised for the already eliminated Costa Rica. After substitute Josip Drmic put Switzerland back into the lead late on, they looked to be heading for all three points but were denied by a late penalty which rebounded back off of Yann Sommer.

Here's a look at how the players fared.

1. Switzerland: Goalkeeper & Defenders

Yann Sommer 8/10 - Made a string of outstanding saves to keep his side level early on. Left with no chance for Costa Rica's first equaliser and was immensely unlucky to be credited with an own goal after the ball bounced off of his back for the second.

Ricardo Rodriguez 6/10 - Got forward well on a number of occasions and his final ball in to the box was usually pin-point.

Manuel Akanji 6/10 - Not strong enough for Costa Rica's goal but was otherwise very competent in central defence.

Fabian Schar 5/10 - Shaky performance once again and he was caused a number of problems by Colindres, particularly in the first-half. Picked up a suspension and will miss Switzerland's next match.

Stephan Lichtsteiner 6/10 - Whipped in a lovely cross in the lead up to Dzemali's goal but his night was spoiled after picking up a suspension for a needless yellow card.

2. Switzerland: Midfielders

Granit Xhaka 6/10 - A performance that went under the radar due to the fact that he happily carried out the dirty work for his side.

Valon Behrami 6/10 - Steady performance in the heart of midfield, was more effective defensively than offensively.

Blerim Dzemaili 7/10 - Emphatic finish for his goal and was always looking to create opportunities for his side.

Breel Embolo 7/10 - More than justified his inclusion in the starting lineup. Looked direct and threatening and rose brilliantly to nod the ball down for Dzemali's goal.

Xherdan Shaqiri 6/10 - A quiet game for the Stoke man by his standards, but he was efficient in his play when he needed to be**.**

3. Switzerland: Forward

Mario Gavranovic 4/10 - Gavranovic came in for Seferovic after the latter failed to impress for Switzerland against Serbia. Gavranovic didn't impress in this one either and failed to get involved in the game at all and was unsurprisingly taken off for Josip Drmic.

4. Switzerland: Substitutes

Denis Zakaria 5/10 - Did a reasonable job after coming off the bench but gave away a clumsy penalty right at the death.

Josip Drmic 7/10 - Outstanding finish for his goal and looked a lot better than Gavranovic, the man he replaced.

Michael Lang N/A - Didn't have long enough to make an impact.

5. Costa Rica: Goalkeeper & Defenders

Keylor Navas 6/10 - Made a few decent stops and stood no chance with either goal.

Nhlanhla Zwane 6/10 - Wasn't really tested as much as he may have thought coming into the match, but he looked comfortable enough.

Giancarlo Gonzalez 6/10 - Steady, reliable performance. Kept Gavranovic quiet throughout.

Kendall Waston 7/10 - Outstanding header for his goal and made some decent blocks to prevent Switzerland from flourishing up top.

6. Costa Rica: Midfielders

Bryan Oviedo 6/10 - Provided more in the defensive third than in the attacking third but didn't really put a foot wrong.

Cristian Gamboa Β 6/10 - Near identical performance to Oviedo on the other wing, looked reasonable but not spectacular.

Celso Borges 6/10 - Passed in and around the midfield effectively and did his best to stifle Switzerland's midfield when they had possession.

David Guzman 7/10 - Neat and tidy and he even came close to getting himself a goal in the second-half, only to be denied by Sommer.

7. Costa Rica: Forwards

Daniel Colindres 7/10 - Costa Rica's brightest player. Looked very dangerous and caused the Swiss defence a number of problems, especially in the first half.

Bryan Ruiz 5/10 - A tired performance that was not on par with his attacking teammates. His performance was summed up by the fact that he couldn't even claim his penalty which came off the back of Sommer.

Joel Campbell 6/10 - Full of running and full of enthusiasm but he lacked an end product on a number of occasions.

8. Costa Rica: Substitutes

Rodney Wallace N/A - No time to make an impact after coming on in the 80th minute.

Ian Smith N/A - Came on in the last minute, no time to make an impact.

Randall Azofeifa N/A - Came on in the last minute, no time to make an impact.
