And a heartwarming example of that is the story of Bradley Lowery, a five-year-old Sunderland fan with terminal cancer, who received upwards of 28,000 Christmas cards following an appeal by football fans.
Bradley, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2013, led his beloved Black Cats out ahead of their match against Chelsea on Wednesday night and scored against Blues goalkeeper Asmir Begovic before kick off.
"Can I just say up to now the response has been immense and we can't thank everyone enough for your kind words," Bradley's mother posted on Facebook.
"We look forward to reading your kind words with Brad and the gifts and money he has received is fantastic. We want to say a huge thank you to you all for helping make Bradley's Christmas the most memorable ever."
