Goodbye, reverse-chronology. Hello,ย algorithms.

Instagramย told users and businessesย today that theirย photoย feeds โ€œwill soon be ordered to show the moments [it believes]ย you will care about the most.โ€ย Up until now, Instagram organized its feeds in reverse-chronological order. That is, the photos in your feed appearedย whenever they were shared.

The change was inevitable. As the New York Timesย writes, Facebook introduced algorithmic ordering to its News Feed back in 2009. Andย while the change prompted protests, the resultingย panic wasย short-lived. Weโ€™ll likely see the same results with Instagram, whichย appears to be handling the situation cautiously: โ€œWeโ€™re going to take time to get this right and listen to your feedback along the way,โ€ the company wroteย in a blog post.

For now, Instagram is testing the change with a small subset of users, the NYT writes. However, make no mistake, Instagramโ€™s decision appears to beย a permanent:ย โ€œYouโ€™ll see this new experience in the coming months,โ€ the company wrote.

Like Facebook, Instagramย aims toย show you stuffย you care as oftenย as possible โ€” the serviceโ€™s ad revenue depends on it. On that note, aย recent study suggests Instagramโ€™s interaction rates dropped significantly the previous year. Perhaps Instagramโ€™s new feeds will reverse that trend.
