Oral Health: Dental Body Debunks Toothpaste Colour Claims
The Nigerian Dental Association (NDA) has issued a stern warning regarding the proliferation of misleading oral health information on social media, specifically addressing viral claims that link the coloured marks on toothpaste tubes to their chemical composition and safety.
In a statement co-signed by Dr. Emedom M. Elias, President of the Nigerian Dental Association; Dr. Franklin Abhulimen, Secretary General; and Dr. Victor Nwabudike, Chairman of the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, the NDA urged the public to verify all oral health information with registered professionals. They strongly advised against believing claims made by individuals who falsely present themselves as dental experts online.
Debunking the 'Toothpaste Colour Code'
The association highlighted a recent viral video featuring an individual self-identifying as a 'doctor' without offering any proof of certification or registration with the NDA. This individual erroneously claimed that toothpaste tubes bearing green marks were "natural and safe", while those with blue, red, or black marks were harmful.
The NDA unequivocally stated: “This information is false, misleading, and not supported by any clinical, scientific, or regulatory evidence.”
The True Meaning of Tube Marks
To clarify, the NDA explained that the small square or rectangular marks found at the sealed end of toothpaste tubes are known in manufacturing as "Eye Marks" or "Colour Registration". These are crucial for automated packaging machines, guiding them on where to cut and seal the tubes during high-speed production. Furthermore, these marks ensure proper alignment and assist sensors in the production line.
Crucially, these coloured marks bear no relation to the ingredients or constituents of the toothpaste. They do not determine the product's safety nor serve as a benchmark to establish whether a product is chemical or natural.
Fluoride Safety Reaffirmed
In a related development, the NDA also referenced a previous viral video where a Clergyman warned the public against using fluoride-containing toothpastes, falsely claiming that fluoride could lead to cancer in humans. The association noted that the internet is rife with such oral health misconceptions, which pose a significant danger to the general public.
The NDA reassured the public that fluoride and all other constituents of toothpastes are meticulously regulated. This ensures compliance with recommended concentrations and adherence to stringent safety standards set by relevant health authorities and agencies before any product is approved for public use.
