The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker hit the milestone on his 295th appearance for the Spanish club to seal a 3-1 Primera Division victory against Eibar on Saturday

Fernando Torres scored his 100th goal for Atletico Madrid to seal a 3-1 victory against Eibar on Saturday.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker reached the landmark on his 295th appearance for the club with what was his first strike since September.

"Finally, after many matches and many years... this record is something that will be with me forever because I will be among the top scorers in the club's history," the 31-year-old told Canal+. "It's an award."

Torres rejoined Atletico in January 2015 and briefly rediscovered the form that once made him the most expensive player in British football with goals against both Barcelona and Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

"The team have shown that we have recovered after several games without a win," he continued. "We have to get back into the title fight.

"I want to score the maxium number of goals and play the maximum number of minutes."

This season, however, the Spaniard has struggled badly despite Atletico's largely impressive season and his goal against Eibar was his first in 20 games in all competitions and only his third this season in total.

Despite that poor record, Torres remains an Atletico icon. The World Cup winner made his debut for the club at just 17 years of age and ended his first spell at the club with 75 goals in 174 top-flight appearances.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone, whose side are second in La Liga - level on points with Barcelona but having played two gams more - has already confirmed that Torres will leave again come the end of the season.
