UK Visas Go Digital For Nigerian Travellers
From 25 February 2026, Nigerian nationals applying for a UK Visit visa will receive an eVisa instead of a physical sticker in their passport, marking a significant step in the UK Visas and Immigration's transition towards a fully digital border.
This innovative change means that travellers will gain electronic access to their visa via their UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account, representing a major advancement in modernising the United Kingdom’s visa procedures.
For applicants from Nigeria, the fundamental requirements for a visa application will remain unaltered, as confirmed by a statement issued by the UK High Commission in Abuja on Monday.
Streamlined Application Process
The statement clarified that travellers will continue to apply in the usual manner, attend a visa application centre to provide biometric information, and must still satisfy all existing eligibility criteria. The sole modification is the method by which the visa is issued.
Instead of receiving a physical sticker, successful applicants will now be provided with a secure digital record of their immigration status. Critically, Nigerians who currently possess a valid vignette sticker in their passport are not required to take any immediate action, as their existing physical visa will remain valid until its expiry date or until it necessitates replacement.
Benefits of Digital Visas for Nigerian Travellers
The transition to eVisas offers several distinct advantages for Nigerian travellers. Passports are expected to be returned more swiftly, and individuals will have the flexibility to manage their immigration status online at any time and from any global location. Furthermore, the digital format enhances security, as eVisas cannot be misplaced, stolen, or tampered with.
Mrs Gill Lever OBE, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, expressed her welcome for this significant transition. “We are committed to making it easier for Nigerians to travel to the UK,” she stated.
She continued, “This move to digital visas will streamline a key component of the visa process, making it more secure while simultaneously reducing our reliance on paper documentation. We eagerly anticipate continuing to welcome Nigerian visitors, students, and workers to the UK.”
Once a visa application receives approval, applicants will simply need to establish a free UKVI account to gain access to their new eVisa.
