Plateau Community Attack: Two Killed, One Injured

At least two residents were tragically shot dead and one injured during a renewed attack by armed bandits on Garga community, Kanam Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria, on Monday evening.

According to Alh. Usman Muhammed Danladi, the Iyan Garga and a respected traditional ruler within the Garga community, the bandits reportedly stormed the area on Monday evening, firing shots indiscriminately. This sudden assault resulted in two fatalities and one injury.

“Some bandits invaded our community this Monday evening. They were shooting sporadically, and people ran for their dear lives,” Alh. Danladi reported, detailing the chaotic scene. He confirmed that the attackers shot three youths: “one died instantly, another died later, and the remaining injured victim has been rushed to the hospital.”

Vigilante Response and Community Fears

Following the brutal attack, members of the local vigilante group swiftly mobilised and pursued the assailants as they fled into the nearby bushland. “It is now calm in the community. Our local vigilantes and community members have chased them away,” Alh. Danladi added, indicating a temporary resolution to the immediate threat.

However, Ya’u Musa, another community member, revealed that the attack has generated profound fear among residents. Reports circulating suggest that the bandits are regrouping, intending to launch another assault on the village, intensifying the widespread anxiety.

A History of Violence in Kanam

This latest incident tragically adds to a relentless series of violent attacks that have plagued communities across Kanam in recent years. Our correspondent reports that in both 2023 and 2024, numerous villages, including Garga itself, endured assaults by armed groups.

These prior attacks led to the devastating loss of over 100 lives and resulted in the widespread displacement of families, painting a grim picture of persistent crime and insecurity.

Residents of various communities within Kanam LGA have consistently voiced their concerns over what they describe as persistent security breaches in their areas. They are making urgent appeals to security agencies to intensify patrols and establish more permanent security posts to deter these recurrent and devastating attacks, which continue to threaten lives and livelihoods.
