The hosts - playing in front of a half-empty stadium - appeared to have salvaged some pride after their Copa del Rey first-leg thumping, but were undone late on yet again
Valencia and under-fire boss Gary Neville were denied a rare victory as Wilfrid Kaptoum came off the bench to preserve Luis Ennrique's unbeaten run as Barcelona cantered into the Copa del Rey final.
Los Che faced an almost impossible task on Wednesday night, having conceded seven times at Camp Nou in the first leg, and also had to deal with a fan protest that left the Mestalla stadium almost entirely empty.
Luis Enrique made a string of changes for the match, fielding few first-team stars with the tie already virtually assured, and that produced a timid, dull first half.
But Valencia did find a first-half breakthrough, Alvaro Negredo tucking away a rebounded shot to bag his sixth goal of 2016, and looked to be clinging on for a symbolic win until substitute Kaptoum found a late equaliser.
