At least nine individuals have tragically lost their lives following a series of explosions along Dansadau Road in Zamfara State. The devastating incidents occurred on Saturday in the vicinity of Mai Aya Aya, specifically before the Kwankelai junction on the old Dangulbi Road, near Ruwan Dawa village and Magamin Maitarko.
Bandits Blamed for Coordinated IED Attacks
Initial investigations strongly suggest that Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were deliberately planted by suspected bandits at three distinct locations. Malam Yunusa Isah, a resident of Malele village and an eyewitness, reported that the first explosion instantly killed four people. Subsequently, a second IED detonated when a trailer drove over it, claiming an additional five lives. Mal. Nuhu Ibrahim Dansadau, another local resident, corroborated the toll from the first two blasts and stated that the casualties from the third explosion were still being assessed.
Growing Insecurity and Road Construction Disruptions
Nuhu Ibrahim Dansadau further alleged a significant increase in bandit attacks within the Dansadau community since Governor Dauda Lawal's recent visit. He suggested that these attacks are a calculated effort by the assailants to instill fear among residents and impede the ongoing construction work on the Dansadau road project. This escalation in crime watch and violence poses a serious threat to infrastructure development and the safety of citizens in the region.
Community Tensions and Police Response
The incident is also being linked to a preceding crisis on Friday involving Fulani groups and residents of Magami. Nuhu explained that the bandits' refusal to sell rustled cattle at Magami Market might have provoked their retaliatory actions, coupled with their apparent desire to halt the road construction. Meanwhile, the Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed the suspected IED explosions along the Dansadau to Magami Road. However, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, stated that the precise number of casualties remains undetermined, with investigations actively underway to ascertain the full scope of the tragic events.
