Kano Market Fire: FG, APC Governors Donate N8bn
The Nigerian Federal Government has pledged N5 billion, alongside an additional N3 billion from All Progressives Congress (APC) governors, to assist victims of the devastating fire that ravaged the Singer Market in Kano on Saturday, destroying goods and property worth billions of naira.
Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the Federal Government's intervention on Monday during a visit of sympathy to the market. He described the incident as a national tragedy, emphasising that the extensive loss was significant not only for Kano State but for the entire country.
The Vice President offered prayers for the victims and appealed to Allah to prevent future disasters of such immense magnitude. During his visit, Vice President Shettima was accompanied by the governors of Jigawa, Kebbi, and Imo states, demonstrating a unified front of support.
Governors Provide Additional Support
Junaid Zakari, Chairman of the Singer Market Traders Association, expressed his appreciation to the Federal Government for what he termed a timely and exceptionally generous gesture. Meanwhile, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, also confirmed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors had collectively donated N3 billion to the fire victims.
Governor Yusuf made this announcement during his formal defection to the party at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano. He provided assurances that the allocated funds would be managed judiciously to support the affected traders and to facilitate the revival of business activities within the market, which is crucial for the local economy.
Impact and Ongoing Investigation
The destructive fire consumed over 1,000 shops and kiosks within what is recognised as northern Nigeria’s largest commodity hub. This massive loss has left a significant void in the region's commercial landscape.
Fire Service authorities have stated that their investigation is still ongoing. They are working diligently to ascertain the precise cause of the fire and to thoroughly assess the full extent of the damage inflicted upon the traders and their livelihoods.
