The 18-year-old struck twice in his league debut to help Louis van Gaal's side register a 3-2 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford

Marcus Rashford’s sensational introduction to Manchester United’s first team continued on Sunday as his double inspired Louis van Gaal’s side to a 3-2 victory over Arsenal.

The 18-year-old followed up his impressive senior debut in the Europa League, in which he scored twice, with another stunning display at Old Trafford on Sunday.

And not only did he become United’s youngest ever player to score in his first Premier League start, Rashford inadvertently struck up a spooky connection to Wayne Rooney.

Both players were exactly 18 years and 120 days old when they first scored two goals in the same Premier League game - with Rooney hitting his first double in a 3-3 draw for Everton against Southampton in February 2004.

"It's unbelievable when you are 18 years old and you come in," Van Gaal said about Rashford after the match.

"I can understand it like last Thursday against Midtjylland because you are coming in and you do your thing without any pressure.

"But the second time is more difficult and he played a very good match. The things I asked of him, he scores again - four goals in two matches - that is an average that is unusual!

"You get a chance and you have to perform, you have to do the things that we are asking. I have always said it is not a matter of age, it is a matter of quality and he shows it."
