PIC.1.-TRAFFIC-GRIDLOCK-IN-LAGOS-810x456It was a bloody morning yesterday, as an 18-seater mass transit bus was involved in a fatal accident on Ikorodu Road just by Agip bus stop. As stated by eyewitnesses present at the scene of the accident, it happened between 4-30 and 5 am yesterday. An eyewitness who didn’t want to be named told The Guardian, “The bus was obviously coming from the North because it was full of Abokis (Northerners) and they were going to their park at Ijora. They were on the fast lane and this trailer suddenly swerved and hit the bus. Nobody knows why he left his lane and hit the bus. I don’t know if he was drunk or if it was a brake problem, but immediately the trailer hit the bus, the bus lost control and hit that street lamp (pointing to a street lamp under the bridge). The bus somersaulted onto the other lane and another trailer coming at high speed hit them at once, instantly crushing the bus and the occupants to death.”

The eyewitness who is a tout at Fadeyi bus stop went on to add that most of the passengers died on the spot but one man and a set of twins were barely alive. As stated by him, he said they called the Lagos State Emergency numbers endlessly but there was no response. He then adds that some of them went to Jibowu under bridge to alert the ambulance usually stationed there but there was no response either.

The surviving man eventually gave up the ghost at the scene before help could reach him and he further claims that the police had arrived on the scene by then and whisked the twins away to their station instead of a hospital. The children were eventually brought back to the scene of the accident, dead. The trailer that hit the bus initially, escaped, but he claims that the driver of the second trailer was apprehended but this has not been confirmed. “People were just standing and looking instead of trying to help them. Even the police that came initially were just looking as if they were confused. Eventually, some private cars and danfos eventually rallied around to help,” he said

The victims were all confirmed dead and taken away in body bags and the bus towed away but the accident caused a backlog of traffic, which lasted till late afternoon yesterday.
