A power outage is affecting several government buildings in Detroit and has left some parts of the city without working traffic lights.

Detroit Public Schools says it’s dismissing students at mid-day Tuesday because of the outage, which occured at about 10:30 a.m.

Other affected facilities include Joe Louis Arena, home of hockey’s Detroit Red Wings, fire stations and parts of Wayne State University. Service also has been temporarily suspended by the Detroit People Mover, an elevated rail line that loops downtown.

Detroit’s public lighting department, which serves areas of the city affected by the outage, says “a major cable failure” caused the grid to lose power.

Detroit-based DTE Energy Co., which often assists the city with power issues, says it’s checking into the problem and would have information soon.
