Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has instructed the Sokoto State Primary Healthcare Development Agency to absorb 50 nurses and midwives trained by SURE-P into the state civil service.
A statement issued by Tambuwalβs Spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, stated in Sokoto today that the nurses and midwives formed the backbone of SURE-Pβs maternal health project executed in eight local government areas of the state in the last two years.
The statement quoted Tambuwal as saying βwe intend to continue with the maternal health project in the state even though the Federal Government has decided to halt the SURE-P programme.β
The governor noted that the state government also planned to employ all the midwives currently undergoing the compulsory one year internship training, noting that the last batch of trainees graduated on Nov. 14
This, he added, was to boost the health manpower requirements in the state.
He explained that the affected professionals, which included both indigenes and non-indigenes, would be placed under Grade Level 7 under the scheme of the Primary Healthcare Development Agency.
As stated by the statement, funds had already been provided by the state government to settle their salaries and other entitlements.
