Scores of Boko Haram fighters, who were on the run after the bombardment of their hideouts in Sambisa forest, were yesterday, gunned down by soldiers manning their secret escape route in Pulka village near Gwoza town, army officials stated.

After three weeks of strategic mapping of the areas occupied by Boko Haram fighters, the military had, on Sunday night, embarked on rapid bombardment of the insurgents’ enclaves by attacking, simultaneously, from air and ground.

As stated by spokesman of the Nigeria Army, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, who confirmed this in a press statement, a cache of arms was recovered from the killed insurgents

“During the encounter, many of the terrorists were killed while one was captured alive,” Colonel Usman stated.

“The troops also recovered a General Purpose Machine Gun, several rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition, 47 rifle magazines, 36 hand grenades and quite a number of Shilka gun empty shells.”

In a related development, troops also dealt another decisive blow to the Boko Haram terrorists at Buni Yadi general area yesterday afternoon. At an encounter, the troops recovered a Toyota Hilux, two boxes of 7.62mm ammunition and some materials used for making improvised explosive devices.
